Then I started reading about the Quest 2. I love that show, and last week I happened to stumble upon a glowing review for TWD Saints and Sinners VR. The reason I decided to get a Quest 2, funny enough, was The Walking Dead. It felt like a total gimmick, so I’d put the whole VR thing out of my mind until last week. Black grid lines, no smoothness, small field of vision, shitty graphics. But still.īefore today, I’d tried 1 VR experience, back in 2015 at one of those pop-up booths. (Not that VR existed back then, but after I saw The Matrix, I spent weeks thinking about it.) What if there was a way you could actually be there? What if you could shoot an arrow at a dragon not by pressing X on a controller, but actually aiming it at the sky? Swing a lightsaber? Sit in an X-wing? What if it could all feel real? Totally impossible, of course. Still, when I was a kid, I used to daydream about VR. There are so many filters between the game and reality - you have this controller, you’re sitting on your couch staring at the TV, you have to grind and grind to do anything and fake walk around trying not to get stuck using a little joystick, you have to mash all these buttons if you want to shoot an arrow or whatever. But there was always this huge disconnect between the world your imagination creates while playing a video game as a child, and the actual experience. It’s not that I didn’t like the idea of video games, even as an adult. We had an Xbox 360 and a racing wheel in our dorm room in college, which I enjoyed, but that was the last time a video game was able to keep my attention more than 10 minutes. But to me, 90% of the fun of video games was hanging out with your buddies, so the older I got, the less I played. I’m not a “video gamer.” Sure, I had a GameCube as a kid, and I enjoyed a good round of Mario Kart as much as the next person. I’m absolutely flabbergasted right now, holy shit.
